Key Environmental Metrics
Cumulative impact since Boise Boxes was founded in 2020. These numbers represent real, measurable environmental outcomes.
The Environmental Case for Box Reuse
Manufacturing a single corrugated box requires approximately 3 gallons of water, produces 1.1 pounds of CO2 equivalent emissions, and consumes energy from both the pulping process and transportation of raw materials. When that box is used once and discarded, all of those resources are wasted.
Reusing a box skips the entire manufacturing process. There is no pulping, no chemical treatment, no energy-intensive drying, and no virgin timber harvested. The only environmental cost is the transportation to collect, sort, and redistribute the box — a fraction of the footprint of making a new one.
Even compared to recycling, reuse is the clear environmental winner. Recycling still requires significant energy and water to break down cardboard into pulp and reform it. Reuse extends the useful life of existing material without any reprocessing. The EPA's waste hierarchy places reuse above recycling for exactly this reason.
Per-Box Impact
Water Saved
per box reused vs. new production
CO2 Prevented
greenhouse gas emissions avoided
Energy Conserved
electricity equivalent saved
Trees Protected
tree equivalent per box preserved
Year-by-Year Environmental Impact
Our growth directly translates into increased environmental savings. Each year, more boxes diverted means more resources conserved.
| Year | Boxes Diverted | Trees Saved | CO2 Avoided (MT) | Water Saved (gal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 18,000 | 430 | 65 | 1.5M |
| 2021 | 52,000 | 1,240 | 188 | 4.3M |
| 2022 | 89,000 | 2,130 | 322 | 7.4M |
| 2023 | 124,000 | 2,970 | 449 | 10.3M |
| 2024 | 148,000 | 3,540 | 536 | 12.3M |
| 2025 | 81,000* | 2,090* | 280* | 6.9M* |
* 2025 figures are year-to-date through Q2. Full-year projections are on track to exceed 2024 totals. MT = Metric Tons.
2025 Goals Progress
At the start of 2025, we set six ambitious sustainability goals. Here is where we stand as of mid-year.
Divert 150,000 boxes from landfill
On TrackAchieve 99% landfill diversion rate
In ProgressReduce delivery fleet emissions by 20%
AchievedServe 1,200 active business customers
On TrackLaunch refurbishment services for gaylord boxes
AchievedEstablish 3 new recycling facility partnerships
In ProgressOur Circular Economy Model
The traditional packaging model is linear: make, use, discard. Our model is circular: collect, inspect, reuse, and only recycle when reuse is no longer possible.
Collect
We source used boxes from local businesses through our buyback program and recycling pickup service. Boxes are transported to our warehouse in optimized routes.
Inspect & Grade
Every box undergoes visual and structural inspection. Boxes are graded A through D and sorted by size. Damaged but repairable boxes go to refurbishment.
Reuse & Sell
Graded boxes re-enter circulation through our sales channels. Businesses buy the grade and size they need at 30-70% off new box prices.
Recycle at End-of-Life
When a box can no longer be reused, we send it to certified recycling facilities. The fiber becomes new paper products — nothing goes to landfill.
Future Sustainability Targets
Our commitment to sustainability extends well beyond this year. Here are the milestones we are working toward through 2030.
- ›Divert 1 million cumulative boxes from landfill
- ›Achieve 100% landfill diversion (zero-landfill certification)
- ›Expand delivery coverage to all of Ada and Canyon counties
- ›Introduce electric delivery vehicles to our fleet
- ›Expand used box operations to Twin Falls and Pocatello
- ›Launch a statewide box exchange platform for Idaho businesses
- ›Achieve carbon-neutral operations across all facilities
- ›Double refurbishment capacity to extend average box lifespan by 2 additional cycles
- ›Divert 5 million cumulative boxes from Idaho landfills
- ›Establish partnerships with 5,000+ Idaho businesses
- ›Achieve net-zero carbon emissions across entire supply chain
- ›Become Idaho's largest circular packaging provider
Impact on the Boise Community
Our sustainability efforts are not just about environmental metrics — they create real economic value for the Boise community. By purchasing used boxes from local businesses, we put money back into the local economy. By selling quality used packaging at lower prices, we help businesses reduce overhead and reinvest in growth.
In 2025 alone, we estimate that our customers collectively saved over $380,000 on packaging costs by choosing used boxes over new. That is $380,000 that stayed in the Treasure Valley economy rather than going to out-of-state corrugated manufacturers.
We also partner with local nonprofits to provide free moving boxes to families in need, support community cleanup events, and donate to environmental education programs in Boise-area schools.
